How does spending after recovery from a recession/depression compare to spending before the recession?

Every day presents new opportunities to reuse, repurpose and create, and it’s the frugal person who recognizes those opportunities, seizes them and turns them into savings

How does spending after recovery from a recession/depression compare to spending before the recession?

For example: was spending after recovering from the Great Depression (or dot-com bust or any other recession) similar to spending before the Depression?

There's talk nowadays about how people are saving money because of the tough economy and how they plan on continuing to save in the future, but what do trends in spending throughout history show? What did people spend money on before a recession that they spend more/less on after recovery?

Based on history, are people likely going to maintain frugality after the current recession?

Please cite sources (charts & graphs, articles, etc.). Most thorough answer gets 10 points.

Spending recovers and eventually exceeds pre-recession level.
It can take years though for that to happen.
